  • What are the ancient fungi?
  • Why does Mulch experience other people’s nightmares?
  • Do those nightmares connect to the Unraveling?

Reusable Early Hooks

Vanishing Mine Shaft

Workers disappear in a shaft. Search parties also fail to return. This can be linked to Cinderquartz, the Artery, undead, a buried temple, or a separate creature.

Poison the Well

A cartel or cult plans to introduce disease into a water source, possibly as part of a demon-raising ritual. Because water sustains the entire civilization, the plot is both mass murder and political destabilization.

The Sealed Crate

The party is hired to deliver a sealed crate. An apparent roadside ambush distracts them while covert agents exchange the chest. The original concept reveals a child in deathlike stasis, raising questions about vampires, sacrifice, and cult agendas.

Repeating Street Urchin

The same child approaches different adults on different days, asks for help, and leads them away. The child may be bait, illusion, shapeshifter, victim, or repeated memory.

Cursed City Support Mission

A low-level party serves as support for stronger heroes, is ordered not to enter a ruin, and must respond when the experts return dead. This hook developed into the Ashen Vow expedition.

Superseded or Revision-Required Hooks

Intrepid’s Shared-Society Artifact

The original hook depended upon all inhabitants sharing one society with a failing artifact. The revised origin gives them many unrelated backgrounds. Preserve only the possibility of a failing vessel component or a new shared need.

“THING” in the Temple

The placeholder objective was replaced by the developed Cinderheart and Ashur-Ka material.

Open Vecna Worship

Early world design made Vecna’s supremacy overt. Later public religion centers Ra. The metaphysical truth remains, but open Vecna worship should not be assumed without deciding how the two layers connect.
