Outline

Regional Pattern

The region is arranged in broad north-south and east-west bands of habitability and danger:

  1. A fertile, heavily settled river valley.
  2. The western mountain barrier and its mines.
  3. The vast desert beyond the mountains.
  4. Hidden underground waterways and worlds beneath the visible landscape.

The geography reinforces the campaign’s social structure. Life, law, wealth, punishment, and religious authority all depend upon control of water and passage between these regions.

Khat’Najat and the River Valley

Khat’Najat, “The Lifeline,” is the great river that sustains nearly all settled civilization. The valley is warm, green, humid, and heavy with the scent of water and life.

Cities, towns, farms, and villages follow the riverbanks. Moving away from it quickly means leaving reliable food, water, shade, and political protection.

Amarna, the largest city, stands within this fertile corridor.

The Pharaoh’s Teeth

A western mountain range rich in:

  • Stone.
  • Minerals.
  • Gems.
  • Salt.
  • Nullium.
  • Newly discovered magical quartz in at least one mine.

The range separates the settled valley from the Sharian. It is economically vital and socially feared because its mines serve as penal labor sites watched by undead overseers.

The mountains contain natural caverns, worked tunnels, collapses, old shafts, and routes that may connect to the Artery.

The Sharian

The desert beyond the Pharaoh’s Teeth is called the Sharian or the Empty Sea.

It is not culturally understood as vacant land. It watches, remembers, and buries what it chooses. Sand conceals ancient cities, temples, tombs, magical ruins, monsters, and histories that public powers may prefer forgotten.

Major travel hazards include heat, distance, unreliable water, shifting routes, predators, undead, bandits, and supernatural regions whose rules are not obvious.

The Treacherous Land

A particularly dangerous region within the Sharian. Its precise boundaries are not finalized. The name can identify a broad zone of especially unstable terrain, monster activity, cursed ruins, or routes avoided by ordinary caravans.

The Artery

A secret underground river flowing through a hidden subterranean world beneath the desert. It may function as an underworld ecosystem, a travel route, a source of forbidden water, or a literal counterpart to Khat’Najat.

The campaign has established the Artery’s existence but not how the party learned of it or what societies and creatures live along it.

Oases and Water

Water is never merely a background resource.

  • Khat’Najat sustains ordinary life and state power.
  • Oases determine desert routes and survival.
  • The Bowels of Anubis heals, preserves, and tortures.
  • The Well of Anubis provides an ingredient for the ’Iiskir Elixir, though its relationship to the Bowels remains uncertain.
  • Poisoning a well is therefore both mass violence and a religious-political act.

Travel and Environmental Scale

Common or established travel methods include:

  • Horses.
  • Giant riding lizards.
  • Hyena-drawn sleds.
  • Elephant caravans maintained by specialized nomads.
  • Rare, expensive airships pulled by enormous creatures.

Long routes across the Sharian can become adventures in their own right, while river travel provides the region’s safest large-scale movement.
