Character, holdings, and sigil
Morcant keeps arcane knowledge, vampire histories, traditions, and sire-defined lineages. It remembers origins that others forget or embellish and can assemble support against a house that violates shared obligations. Its strongest weapons are a credible record and the ability to persuade others to act.
Witness Hall, a sandstone residence around a roofed court, contains document vaults, ceramic archive jars, and dark inlaid speaking circle. Voluntary arbitration and recorded testimony fit its work; no proceeding gives Balthazar automatic authority over every vampire. Escrow holdings, research patronage, and agreed fees support the institution.
Its square sigil is a bronze key across a closed eye. Its maxim is “Let the record endure.”
Morcant Members
Lord Balthazar Morcant — head and keeper of tradition
Grave, precise, and difficult to hurry, Balthazar insists that a useful claim survive careful questioning. He prefers to hire force, expose a contradiction, or build a coalition rather than personally conduct every dangerous task. His respect for Othmar's custodial duty coexists with distaste for the man's manners. He knows that ancestry can puncture Vael's pretensions. Whether he is the old man Sylvester almost killed during an earlier caravan attack remains an open identity question.
Balthazar is a spare older-looking man with a long, lined face, warm brown skin, a bald crown, and short silver hair at the sides. A squared silver beard, heavy umber robes, and a bronze key-and-eye clasp give his still, seated presence judicial gravity.
Dame Petronella Morcant — archivist
The oldest active member of the household treats access to information as a privilege. A ruthless editor of house histories, she can preserve an account accurately while limiting who sees it. Balthazar relies heavily on her command of the vaults. She is a plausible gatekeeper for dangerous research materials, but her personal involvement in forbidden experiments is unconfirmed.
Petronella is an elderly-looking, very thin woman with deeply lined light-brown skin and long silver hair drawn into a severe braid. Dark layered robes, archive keys, and a narrow, appraising gaze make her seem as enduring and guarded as the records she tends.
Quentin Rusk (mortal) — advocate and witness examiner
Quentin helps petitioners articulate claims and tests whether nobles' records omit the powerless. His right to challenge the house is an internal practice; Morcant has no universal vampire court. He increasingly doubts whether technically valid bargains made under hunger or threat deserve respect. His work can expose useful witnesses and uncomfortable inconsistencies even when he lacks the power to compel a remedy.
Quentin is a mortal man of medium build, with warm brown skin, receding dark hair, and a neatly trimmed beard. His sand-colored advocate’s robes show wear; a document case is usually tucked under one arm as he studies the people addressing him.
Ysabet Morcant — envoy
Ysabet verifies accounts outside the vault and favors testimony from servants and travelers alongside noble declarations. She carries information to those guarding dangerous objects and can understand why Drazek refuses to circulate a discovery. She and Othmar have a secret romantic relationship, renewed around inter-house gatherings. Her sympathy for his roughness contrasts with Balthazar's criticism; it need not imply disloyalty to Morcant.
Ysabet is an adult woman with deep brown skin, an observant expression, and black hair secured in a practical braided bun. A dusty gray cloak covers bronze-toned linen; her upright stance and unencumbered hands suggest an envoy accustomed to traveling and questioning witnesses.
Apparent ages do not establish the vampires' chronological ages.
Historical background
Balthazar convened negotiations after the Cistern Siege and preserves the witnessed original of the Compact. Each house has its own copy. The agreement discourages attacks on acknowledged dependents and provides a forum for witnessed disputes, with compliance resting on reputation, interests, and collective pressure.
Morcant supports order and tradition through voluntary agreements. Its judgments are private decisions accepted by the parties or disputed recommendations; it has no formal authority over every house.
Knowledge, research, and treatment of mortals
Morcant seeks knowledge whether forbidden or permitted. Its research concerns vampiric transformation, who sired whom, and true lineage, extending to all transformative magic. Proposed research includes experiments on other vampires, possibly using witch blood. Exact procedures, participants, and results remain undeveloped. Preserving a harmful ritual does not mean practicing it.
Morcant recognizes mortal property and agreements. Its scholars may nevertheless accept exploitative bargains, and their research ambitions can conflict with Quentin's concern about coercion. A valuable expert can receive great respect while vulnerable people struggle to be heard.
Secrets and internal tensions
- Drazek's charge: Morcant knows what the mountain guardians protect, supports them with information, and may entrust dangerous objects to them.
- Private romance: Ysabet and Othmar's affair connects the houses beyond their institutional respect.
- Lineage leverage: A Vael member outside the portrait has an illegitimate or overstated title. Whether Morcant has already identified that person is not established.
- Optional annex hook: Petronella may have concealed a Compact annex protecting certain mortal communities collectively. Balthazar's delay in exposing it can undermine his credibility. Evidence would support a coalition against abuse, not trigger an automatic legal conviction.
- Origin uncertainty: A damaged royal genealogy permits incompatible readings. The older belief that vampires descend from former Pharaohs promised eternal life remains unconfirmed.
How Morcant views the other houses
- Vael: Broadly neutral and less impressed by aristocratic claims than Vael would like. Its records may contradict the house's preferred self-image.
- Koss: Crude and messy, but usable. Corvin buys Morcant intelligence; Morcant can hire or steer Koss's force.
- Harrow: A valuable, friendly source of traveling reports, books, and discoveries.
- Drazek: Respected custodians. Differences in presentation do not erase shared purpose or the option of handing over dangerous finds.
- Belrath: A generally friendly partner in knowledge exchange that pays its debts. Access and provenance can still be negotiated without a standing feud.
How other houses view Morcant
- Vael: Friendly or tentatively allied. Seraphine values its knowledge while disliking its ability to puncture claims of importance.
- Koss: Useful intelligence from people whose indirect methods differ from Koss's. Corvin is the named buyer.
- Harrow: Respected keepers of knowledge. Harrow directs suitable books and reports toward them without needing to prize every discovery itself.
- Drazek: Respected keepers who understand the custodial duty and support it with information.
- Belrath: A generally friendly partner in knowledge exchange. Belrath pays its debts and recognizes the value of archives without sharing Morcant's every priority.
Current adventure connection
Morcant's knowledge supplies context for a conflict over a dangerous expedition find. Vera Drazek warns the party after receiving information from Faris Reed. Quentin or Ysabet may provide later contacts.
